Daniel joined Rotary in 1978 with the Glacier Valley Rotary Club of Juneau, Alaska and served several years as club secretary. In 1984, he and the club’s board of directors wrote a letter to Rotary International resigning as a club in protest of RI’s prohibition of women members. RI requested that club wait until a committee completed a review of this issue and the club withdrew their resignation. However, they continued to actively support allowing women in Rotary until the policy was later changed.
In 1985, Daniel transferred his membership to the Olympia, Washington Rotary Club and later to the Lacy, Washington Rotary Club. When he moved to Conway, Arkansas in 1999, he joined the Conway Rotary Club where both his father and grandfather had been members. He served as the club secretary and chairperson of District 6170’s Rotary Foundation - Simplified Grant Committee. He then became the club’s president from 2008–2009. After his term, he became an Assistant District Governor and is currently the chairman of the District’s International Convention Committee. He is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and attended the Salt Lake City Rotary International Convention.
Daniel grew up in Franklin, Louisiana where he loved fishing for bass and red fish; and hunting ducks and quail in the local swamps and fields. He even was successfully operated on by the local voodoo witch doctor. He attended high school in Windsor, Connecticut and attended college at Tulane University and University of Washington (Seattle, Washington). He received his B.A. in history and M.B.A. with a concentration in accounting.
In 1976, he and his wife, Nancy, moved to Juneau, Alaska. In the next eight years, Dan worked for the Alaska Legislature, lived next to a glacier and frequently encountered Alaskan wildlife. During his wife's first pregnancy, she was chased by a black bear. His 1-year old son was christened by the spouting of a 50 foot humpback whale playing next to their boat. And, while in their boat, the family would often watch pods of killer whales swimming underneath them.
The family moved to Olympia, Washington in 1984. Daniel became a governmental financial manager for the local county government and later for the State of Washington, Department of Transportation. Their children, Daniel and Victoria grew up on the seashore in Washington State playing with coyotes and seals. After moving to Conway, Daniel became the customer accounts manager for Conway Corporation, a nonprofit utility company. He and his wife currently live in the house built by his great-great grandfather while their son now lives in Austin, Texas. Their daughter is in Missoula, Montana attending college.
His wife and he are experienced travelers who have visited Asia, Europe, England and Canada. They were asked be part of a delegation of professional governmental finance officers to visit Russia and the Ukraine officials soon after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Nancy is a professional singer who has performed in operas and musicals in Juneau, Seattle, Tacoma, Little Rock, and Conway. She is currently a board member for the Conway Symphony and also works for the Conway Library. |
